The pineapple on pizza debate
It’s officially too late now to wish you a happy new year. Sorry about that.
Pineapple on pizza or not? It’s an issue debated the world over.
The answer of course is yes. The more pudding you can slip into main meals the better in my view. This week I discovered peshwari naan, which is basically like being given cake with your curry – what’s not to love?
But for some, including one Norwich restaurant, it’s more or less a hanging offence.
If you buy a Hawaiian pizza at Lupa Pizza, it will set you back a £100. What makes their Hawaiian so brilliant? Nothing.
The price tag is a passionate statement of their disgust at pineapple-on-pizza enthusiasts. The menu description reads: “Yeah, for £100 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you monster!”
I admire their chutzpah. This also a reminder of the fact that almost everything is marketing – even your pricing can tell your potential customer something about you and your business.
Marketing isn’t just about your website and brochures
It’s there in almost every customer interaction, from the kind of Christmas card you send to the type of crockery you serve coffee in.
It’s easy when you think about marketing as the point of contact between a firm and its customers. You can use those points of contact positively to integrate your prospect straight into your service – or not.
And if you don’t want to work with certain people, better to make that clear up front. Not via the pizza example perhaps, but there are plenty of others to choose from. If used wisely they can all do their bit to tell an overall story about who you are.
So what about a January audit of all those touch points – have a look and see if they’re all doing their bit to promote who you are, what you do, who you do it for - and who you don’t.
