In another instalment of my dental health, I can share that due to teeth grinding, I’m considering getting botox in my jaw. The idea is that it freezes your muscles so they cease to clench.
Why am I grinding in the first place? Well, just due to the general ferocity of life really. I think unless you entirely unplug, it’s very difficult to tense up without realising it.
But it makes me wonder how long these analogue bodies of ours will withstand the digital-heavy life they’re living, especially if it’s going to be a long, 100-year-type one.
I look at my dog Rupert and think he has a life that doesn’t need add-ons. He just does what his body has evolved to do: jogging round the park, chasing cats and snoozing. But he doesn't have as many years in him as me.
Our digital dependency, and greater life expectancy, means we’re now putting our bodies through wear and tear they weren’t designed for. It’s perhaps inevitable that we need to add enhancements – laser eye surgery, spinal implants, or botox for teeth grinding – if we want to enjoy this life in the future.
But while many people are already (perhaps without realising) embracing ‘biohacking’ and ‘longevity tech’, most are financially stuck in the present, ignoring the fact that their future selves might need more than good knees and a Fitbit.
Perhaps if we aligned the two more forcefully, the point about needing to do something about our financial – not just physical health – would be clearer.
For example, the fact that both our bodies and bank accounts need discipline, foresight and regular investment to ensure our future wellbeing. Thereby emphasising the personal responsibility point. We can't leave it to chance. Not if we want to thrive rather than survive.
