October is the new black
While many of us are busy carving pumpkins, others are carving out new beginnings.
Yes, move over January 1st because there’s a new new start date in town. The ‘October Theory’ is a viral TikTok trend (aren’t they all?) that argues that this month is just as good, if not better, than January for recommitting to our goals.
The idea is that the changing of the seasons – the shift from BBQs and beaches to roll necks and soup – is a great opportunity for self-reflection, reviewing plans and starting new habits. The bonus being that if you do manage to do all this, then you’re already ahead of the game: there are still a couple of months left of the year to address anything that feels overdue.
Despite my mocking tone, I like the idea of getting ahead and can see that this might feel less daunting now than in three months’ time when it’s pitch black and we’re all fat, cold and broke.
It also gives us something positive to end the year on, which is often difficult with the stress of Christmas, without that Lennon song coming on asking ‘Another year over and what have you done?’.
Serving suggestion
October coincides with Free Wills Month I notice, so if you did want to mention to clients that reviewing goals and creating new habits isn’t just for new year, then this would be a great example of something they could cross off that to-do list instantly.
It also makes a change from talking about the Budget!
